Thomas E. Sullivan, MD Obituary

Beverly - Thomas Edward Sullivan, MD, 82, of Beverly, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 19th, at the Lincoln Hospice House. Born in Fall River, MA, he was the son of the late Frederick and Mary (Gallagher) Sullivan and the beloved husband of Irene (Nowak) Sullivan.

Dr. Sullivan served as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy and was a dedicated Cardiologist and Internist who practiced medicine for 37 years on the North Shore of Massachusetts. While known for his clinical skill and deep medical knowledge, he was defined above all by his humanity and the compassion he showed to patients, colleagues, and loved ones.

A leader in his field, Dr. Sullivan was a prominent member of the Essex South Medical Society and rose to serve as President of the Massachusetts Medical Society. He was a tireless advocate for the adoption of healthcare information technology to improve patient care. Active at the national level, he served the American Medical Association in various roles and was considered a leading expert in several healthcare fields, frequently lobbying Congress in Washington, D.C. on behalf of the medical community.

Thomas was a devout member of the Catholic church and a pillar of faith in his community. He possessed a deep passion for studying the Bible and the history of Christianity, and he practiced his faith enthusiastically within his parish, St. Margaret's of Scotland in Beverly. His hobbies included sailing, gardening, astronomy, handy manning around the house and discovering new "gadgets".

Thomas is survived by his wife, Irene Sullivan of Beverly; his children, Christopher Sullivan and his wife Chi in the San Francisco Bay Area, Daniel Sullivan of Beverly, and Claire Esten and her husband Jason of Southborough. He also leaves behind his brothers, Frederick, Charles, Michael, Gregory, and Lawrence Sullivan; as well as his cherished granddaughters, Abbey and Caroline Esten, and Cassidy and Alison Sullivan. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Marie Sullivan.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Margaret's of Scotland Church, 672 Hale Street, Beverly, on Wednesday, January 28th at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Beverly. Visiting hours will be held at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, on Tuesday, January 27th from 4 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Thomas' memory to the Dr. Thomas E. Sullivan Scholarship Fund at the Catholic Community Fund - Greater Boston, providing scholarships to students of The Saints Academy in Beverly. Information, directions, and condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com.
