Manchester-by-the-Sea - Speros "Spero" P. Brown, 92, beloved husband of Pauline (Apostolos) Brown, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born December 10,1933, Spero was the son of the late Peter and Anastasia (Synodinos) Brown of Manchester, MA. He grew up in his cherished hometown of Manchester-by-the-Sea, graduated from Story High School in 1952, and earned his degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1956.
Beginning in 1957, Spero proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Tank Corps, achieving the rank of Second Lieutenant at Fort Dix, NJ, and Fort Knox, KY.
After a successful start as a photo-stat machine salesman, Spero joined the family business, Brown's Supermarket, where he managed the Produce Department. He loved engaging customers of all ages and truly getting to know people.
In 1965, he married his lifelong sweetheart, Pauline Apostolos, and together they built a beautiful life centered on love, family, and community.
Spero will be remembered as a man of integrity, character, and kindness, with a quick wit and a warm heart. His favorite saying, "my word is my bond," reflected the way he lived his life—with honesty and respect for others. He found joy in life's simple pleasures: reading, sunbathing and swimming at Singing Beach, listening to marching band music, playing tennis and cards, traveling, wintering in Florida, Greek dancing, and cheering for the Patriots and his beloved Tom Brady. He was also a proud supporter of the football and basketball teams at UMass and Manchester High School.
Deeply rooted in his community, Spero was a member of Pi Epsilon Sigma, St. Vasilios Church Men's Club, and the Manchester Men's Club. For many years, he marched in the town's Memorial Day Parade in uniform, honoring his service with pride and patriotism.
In addition to his wife Pauline (Apostolos) Brown, he is survived by his three children, Michael Brown of Northport, NY and wife, Antonia; Alexis (Brown) Karras of Manchester by the Sea; Katina (Brown) Karafotias and husband Nick, of Middleton, MA; grandchildren, Katina, Mia and her husband, Cam Climo, and Christopher Karras Jr., and Charlie and Ali Karafotias; Survived by sister Katherine "Kay" (Brown) Bulgaris and sister-in-law, Maryjane (McCoo) Brown as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
