Richard E. "Dick" LaPointe Obituary

Beverly - Richard (Dick) Edgar LaPointe entered eternal rest on January 6, 2020. Dick was born in Salem, MA on January 27, 1937 to parents Louis George and Marion (Trask) LaPointe. Predeceased by his brother Louis G LaPointe II.

Dick grew up in Beverly and remained a lifelong resident there. He graduated from Beverly High School and Cushing Academy, Asburnham. Afterwards he attended Bates College, Lewiston, Maine, graduating in 1960 with a Bachelors Degree in Education. Dick began his teaching career at Boothbay Harbor High School, Maine. Over the course of his professional career, he taught History and English at Masconomet HS; Beverly Memorial Junior High; and Technics of Counselling at Salem State University. He was elected and served on the Beverly School Committee. After earning his Masters Degree in Psychology plus 45, he went on to work as a Psychologist for the district wide Peabody Public Schools until his retirement.

Dick was an outstanding athlete during his high school and college years in track, baseball, football and hockey. For three years he was track State Champion at Bates College. With a passion for sports and education, after his regular work days, he coached football in Boothbay Harbor, track at Wakefield, Beverly and Danvers High Schools. A man of many hats, he was a lifeguard on the Beverly beaches during many a summers day; he umpired girls softball games and triple headers, worked nights as a security guard at General Electric; ran a bowling league for junior and high school kids at the Bowl-o-Mat in Beverly. For many years he was a driving school instructor.

His love of nature and the outdoors was nurtured from a young age by his parents, when he and his brother Louis (Skip) spent summers by the lake in NH. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and anything that captivated his imagination. An avid golfer, he loved nothing better than a good round of golf or a Member Guest Tournament in New England; Pebble Creek, TX, St. Simon's Island, Georgia; Hilton Head, GA, with his lifelong friends, Tom, Steve, Leonard, Bart, and Shane. He was a member of Bass Rocks Golf Club, Wenham Country Club, Beverly Golf and Tennis and Rochester Country Club, NH at times throughout his playing life.

Dick endured many physical ailments to live life to the fullest. He exuded positivity in everything he did. A mentor, a great friend with an exuberant zest for life, an engaging personality with a kind heart, he was a unifier of people.

He is survived by his daughters, Lori and her husband, Ross McCulloch, Beverly, Lynn and her husband Leo Legault, Merrimac; his son, Tyler LaPointe, Beverly Farms, Mass. Also by his four grandchildren: Derek & Brian McCulloch and Chad and Cameron Legault, MA; nephews: Louis (Buddy) LaPointe III, Florida Keys, David LaPointe, Fla. and his niece, Cheryl LaPointe Myers, Conn

Mourned by relatives and friends. Also deeply mourned by Martina, Brianna and Shane O'Sullivan.

May his soul rest in peace.
