Salem - Richard Jackson Hannah, 85, died peacefully at home on February 7, 2026, surrounded by family. An old-school and truly dedicated physician in private practice in Salem for 39 years, Richard had a clinical and curious mind and strong opinions on the state of the health care system in America. He enjoyed crafting op-ed rants or personal interest pieces to email to friends who might appreciate his perspective. He maintained relationships across decades and distance, gathering for extended reunions with Harvard Medical School pals, traveling with the Dartmouth '62 gang, Zooming with Lexington High friends and cousins, and corresponding with Deerfield chums. He formed friendships on the tennis courts, in his book club, in the church choir, and in service to the First Church in Salem.
More than anything, Richard loved being with his family. With Joan, his beloved wife and travelling companion of 42 years, Richard stood ready to cheer on his children and their families—Rich, Seana, Matt and Jeremy in Portland, OR; Amy, John, Megan and Conard in Arlington, MA, and Dave, Kyle, Codi, and Ryan in East Longmeadow, MA. "Papa" to his grandchildren, Richard was a collector and teller of jokes and a formidable double solitaire competitor. He relished gatherings in Falmouth, MA: quiet early mornings listening to music, beach walks and channel swims, evening meals on the deck, and sunsets over Buzzards Bay.
Richard also leaves his brother, Paul Hannah and his partner Carol Boehly; his nephew Paul Hannah and niece Margaret Taranto and their families; his sister-in-law Ann Unal; and his first wife, Jean Jones. He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Betty Hannah; his parents-in-law, Harry and Thelma Walker; his brother-in-law, Gurkan Unal; and his sister-in-law, Marilyn Hannah.
A celebration of life will take place in the spring with details to be published when available. Richard asked that in lieu of flowers, friends donate to Doctors Without Borders or a charity of their choice. For guestbook and to send a condolence, kindly visit LevesqueFunerals.com
