Nancy J. Haibon Obituary

Danvers - Nancy Jeanne (Walker) Haibon, 85, formerly of Gloucester and Beverly, passed away peacefully at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers on Saturday, August 11, 2018, following a lengthy illness. She was predeceased by her late husband, Thomas A. Haibon.

Nancy was born on July 7, 1933, in Braintree, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of the late Clara E. (Wynot) Walker and Harry P. Walker Jr. Nancy arrived in this world as a very special person when it was discovered and published in the local newspaper that upon her birth “she is the possessor of a fully grown lower front tooth, the size of which might be attributed to a six months old child! The doctor declared he had never seen such an oddity in his years of experience.”

Nancy resided at the Pilgrim Rehabilitation Nursing Center for the past five years. She previously was a 30-year resident of Gloucester, where she earned the nickname “The Mayor.” She had a remarkable ability to remember the names of everyone she met and was seen frequently in downtown Gloucester in her favorite places such as Dunkin' Donuts, the Lone Gull, Two Sisters, Sugar Magnolia, CVS, Cape Ann Savings Bank, just to name a few. She loved Gloucester and the people of Gloucester embraced and watched over her. She loved Fiesta, whale watches, swimming at the beaches and any social events in the community that were available to her. Since she was not shy and loved being around people, she could make them smile and laugh with her infectious laugh and outspokenness. She enjoyed volunteering her time at Open Door, the Senior Center, Golden Living Center and at other community organizations. Because she loved to get all dressed up no matter the occasion, especially for Halloween, she was also called “Fancy Nancy” and “Nancy Fancy Pants.” She also enjoyed flying in an airplane to visit her sisters in Florida and Virginia. She was never afraid to be adventurous and often spoke of how much fun she had riding the elephant at the Topsfield Fair. No matter how limited she was due to health issues, she never stopped fighting or lost her joy for life and continued to dance and sing, even in her wheelchair at Pilgrim.

She will be dearly missed by her loving family and is survived by her four daughters Sandra Farmer and her husband Peter of Prides Crossing, Debra Haibon of Salem, Brenda Garilli and her husband, Jim of Warren, Vermont, Nancy Haibon of Salem; and one son, Thomas Haibon Jr. and his wife Laura of Beverly; her eight grandchildren, Jennifer Burnett of Beverly, Jaimie Boucher of Salem, Melissa and Michael Haibon of Beverly, Brittany Sullivan of Gloucester, Zachery McCarthy of Salem and Tyler and Jessica Farmer of St. John, USVI; her eight great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jordyn, Taylor, Aydin, Isabella, Sebastian, Cooper and Malik. She is also survived by her two sisters, Eleanor Keith of Dufries, Va., and Dianne Rindone of Auburn, Alabama, and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her very close and dedicated friend Charlie Gilligan.

Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 18, at 1 p.m. in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. Extended family and friends are cordially invited to attend.

Visiting hours will be held prior to the funeral service on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
