South Hamilton - Matthew W. Phelan, age 60, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2020, at home surrounded by his family after a two-year long battle with cancer. He was the son of Elizabeth (Getchell) Phelan and the late James John Phelan.
Matthew was born in Ipswich and grew up in Beverly and graduated from Beverly High School. Matthew loved people and he traveled to many countries settling in a city he loved Melbourne Australia. We all looked forward to his visits and the many stories he brought home. He had an exciting life making many friends along the way.
In addition to his mother he is survived by four siblings Brig. Gen. Mark V. Phelan ret. and his wife Patricia of N.C., Janet Barsanti and her husband Keith of Hamilton, Sean Phelan and Wendy Cuniff of Hamilton, and Jessica Connors and her husband Christian of Wenham; he also leaves his many nieces and nephews Chelsea, Jill and Joseph Phelan, Courtney and Brooke Barsanti, Caitlin, James and Kelly, Lily and Coleman Connors, Whitaker and Chapin Gibbs and Bode Phelan. We'll miss you Uncle Matthew.

His funeral Mass will be held on Friday, February 14, at the Church of St. Paul 50 Union St., Hamilton, at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, February 13, at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, from 4 to 7 p.m. Contributions may be made in his name to Care Dimensions, B-102, 75 Sylvan St., Danvers, MA 01923. So sorry to hear about Matt, I went to elementary school with him and my friends and I would sometimes go to his house on Palmer road. All the girls had a crush on him because he was nice to everyone. God bless you Matthew. My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends. Feb.11,2020
