Hamilton - Mary Schofield Maione, 98 of Hamilton, devoted wife of the late Anthony R. Maione, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her daughters on Wednesday, August 30, 2022.

Mary was born in Port Medway, Nova Scotia, Canada, on February 16, 1924, the daughter of Lee and Bertha (Minnick) Schofield.

Mary graduated as Valedictorian from Hamilton High School in 1942. She worked at G.E. during WWII where she earned a diploma for drafting and blueprinting and was recommended for advanced engineering school. However, always a caregiver, she entered the Cadet Nurse Corps program at Lynn Hospital in 1945. Her military assignment was at McGuire Hospital in Richmond, VA where she cared for wounded soldiers. She was awarded the Faulkner Prize for Proficiency in Surgical Nursing. She graduated in 1948 as a R.N. She has been instrumental in supporting the efforts to pass the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps Service Recognition Act - legislation that recognizes and honors the valuable contributions Cadet Nurses made during a crucial time in American history- as well as helping to get July 1st recognized as Cadet Nurses Day in MA. After the War Mary married and worked as a R.N. at Cable Memorial Hospital, Ipswich for over 44 years. Her career included positions as nurse in the OR, maternity ward, med surge and the ER. In addition to raising her family, she was active in many organizations and has been awarded many accolades. Mary served as President of the Hamilton Mother's Club, a nurse at Girl's State and participated in various programs at the First United Methodist Church of Hamilton. She was active member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 194 in Hamilton where she had served as President moving on to become District 8 Director. She, as an enthusiastic member of the Council of Aging, was awarded the 2008 Volunteer of the Year and had the"Mary Maione Day" declared by the town of Hamilton. She was also a member of the Hamilton Historical Society, volunteered at the Spectrum Program at Danvers Hunt Hospital and participated in the Nurses Study Program at Mass General Hospital. Mary was fond of traveling. She planned & enjoyed various trips around the country with the highlight being an ocean cruise on the QE2. She also continued her education completing courses in tax preparation and real estate.

She is survived by her three loving daughters, Margo Maione of Georgetown, Marilyn Maione of Hamilton, Marcia Maione-Amero of Haverhill; four grandchildren, Amber King and her husband Kenny, Michaela Maione-Balford and her husband Alex, Brendan Downing and his wife Jessie and Matthew Maione-Downing; her great grandchildren, Camden, London and Colby Balford, Maren Downing and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother David Schofield of Salem N.H. She was the sister of the late James Schofield, Lee Schofield, Beatrice Hagstrom, and Dagmar Limbert. She was the mother of her late infant son Ralph.

Mary will be laid to rest in a private graveside ceremony at the Hamilton Cemetery.
