Hamilton - Hamilton - Mair Lewys Walters, MD, of Hamilton, MA, died suddenly on August 16, 2024 at age 97. She was born on May 7, 1927, the only child of Elsie Margaret (Lewis) and J. Oswald Jones, in Aberdulais, a small village in Wales, UK. At a time when few women were able to become doctors, she graduated from the University of Aberdeen School of Medicine in 1950 and spent almost a decade practicing medicine in the Neath Valley, including a stint as Senior Resident in charge of three hospitals.
While in Aberdeen, she read a Bible she'd been given as she left for school and committed her life to Jesus Christ, following Him to the day she died.
In 1959, she married the late Gwyn Walters (d. 1993), a fellow Welshman, and emigrated to the United States, eventually moving to the North Shore of Boston in 1962 where Gwyn was Professor of Ministry at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary.
In 1976, Dr. Walters took up a second profession as a therapist and was a sought-after and well-respected practitioner for 16 years.
Before fitness was a thing, she took brisk daily walks and was active to the day of her stroke. As a 93-year-old, during the pandemic, she participated in the first Virtual World Masters Track and Field Championships, winning the W90 mile in 16:59 minutes. She was a voracious reader, finishing a book a day up to the week she passed. She loved literary classics and biographies, Agatha Christie, Tim Keller, Max Lucado, and her well-worn Bible.
She will be remembered by many for her remarkable ability to listen and to listen well, her wise and practical counsel, the delicious products of her spoon and spatula, and her ready smile and laugh.
She is survived by her beloved children, daughter Gwenfair Adams and her husband Rev. Kevin Adams, and son, Meirwyn Walters and his wife Nina, and her three grandchildren, Davey, Mari and Carys Walters.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday 7, at First Presbyterian Church North Shore, 179 County Road, Ipswich, MA. The link for the live stream: https://www.youtube.com/@FPCNorthshoreIpswich/streams .
