Liesl Marie Voosen Fields Obituary

Beverly, MA - Liesl Marie Voosen Fields died on Saturday, September 27, in Boston, at Brigham and Women's Hospital, surrounded by her loving family, who serenaded her with songs and stories to the end.

She was 48, and a longtime resident of Beverly. Liesl was a bright, active soul, who savored making plans to delight those she held dear: a fall beerfest to attend; a play to see; a Disney trip choreographed like clockwork in a spreadsheet, months in advance. She lived a life full of faith and music, an alto who could also sing soprano, able to find harmony in the many venues of her life, whether it was growing up a pastor's daughter at Bethel Lutheran Church, in Auburn, or blasting musicals in the car with her devoted daughters, Marika and Valena, and her husband, Mike.

A graduate of Trinity College, where she studied political science, with a master's in marketing from Bentley University, Liesl worked her entire career for Bain & Company, the consulting firm. She saw early on the promise of the internet for global marketing, and always pushed the firm to improve its online presence. She loved working in Boston: the walks in Copley Square in crisp fall air; the easy access to weekly manicures; the verve of the town as her beloved Red Sox reached the playoffs.

On September 29, 2002, she married her best friend, Michael Fields, under the forested eaves of Camp Calumet Lutheran, in Freedom, New Hampshire. Calumet was a fixture of their lives; not a summer passed in Liesl's life that she did not see the shores of Lake Ossipee as camper, counselor, or alumna. It was a source of faith, song, and friendship, as each year she gathered with close friends around the campfire, swapping stories and watching their children grow together.

Fourteen years ago, Liesl was diagnosed with stage IV inflammatory breast cancer; had it come a few years earlier, her time would have been short. But work funded by the National Institutes of Health, decades earlier, had just led to new targeted chemotherapy drugs. Liesl beat back the cancer, and did so again several years later, when it metastasized in her brain. Her will to live, to see her girls grow, was a source of amazement and hope to the doctors and nurses of Dana Farber and Brigham and Women's. They called her their miracle, and she was. Her family is eternally grateful for their help in giving Liesl so much more time to plan, to sing, to love.

In addition to her husband, Michael, and her girls, Marika and Valena, Liesl is survived by her parents, the Rev. Edward Voosen and Ruth (Sandberg) Voosen; her sister and brother, Ingerlene Voosen Frick (Brian) and Paul Dopkeen Voosen (Bess); her nephews and nieces, Dean, Tessa, Carli, Ewan, Toby, Soren, Bernard, and Madelaine; and a long, long list of found family.

A funeral will be held on Saturday, October 4, at 10 a.m. at Clifton Lutheran Church in Marblehead, and a memorial service on Saturday, October 11, at Camp Calumet. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Camp Calumet or Clifton Lutheran Church.
