Lynn - John J. Gargalianos, 89, of Lynn, formerly of Peabody, died peacefully after a relatively brief illness.
Son of the late John and Catherine Gargalianos, John is survived by his wife, Diana (Pavlis), son, Peter with his children, Mya and Allison; son, Steven with his children, Jocelyn, Jaron, and Jackson; Godchildren, Virginia and Athena, sister-in-law Katherine, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his sister, Freda and brothers George, Angelo (Lucky), and Tom.
John served in the U.S. Navy, Submarine Division during the Korean Conflict. He worked for IBM until he established his own business, Office Products Services, in 1972. As an active member of the local business community, he was bestowed the Distinguished Service Award by the Lynn Chamber of Commerce.
John was an avid golfer. He spent three years on the Peabody High School Golf team before graduating in 1949. He spent 15 years as a member at Happy Valley (now Gannon) Golf Club before joining Salem Country Club in 1975 where he became a lifetime member. John had many titles and awards as an accomplished amateur golfer, but was particularly proud to have won the Salem Country Club Championship in 1986 and the Massachusetts State Senior Championship in 1987.
For years, John was an active member of the Brotherhood of Freemasonry. He was a Past Master of both the Amity-Mosaic Lodge and the Jordan Lodge, and was recognized with numerous honors including the Joseph Warren Medal for Exemplary Service to Masonry. John was also a member of the Scottish Rite 32° and a Shriner since 1956.
