Ipswich - Ipswich - Hugh Francis O'Flynn, Jr., 83, of Ipswich, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Monday January 20, 2025, after a long struggle with dementia. He was born on February 8, 1941, to Hugh Francis O'Flynn Sr. and Hilda Joyce O'Flynn.
Hugh spent his youth in Portland, Maine, where he excelled as a student and athlete at Deering High School, winning the state championship in the 300m and starring on the football field as a running back and cornerback. His athletic prowess earned him a full scholarship to Boston University, where he continued to shine on the gridiron. After graduating, Hugh served his country in the Coast Guard. Hugh had a successful 35-year career working at Xerox.
Beyond his professional life, Hugh was a passionate sportsman who enjoyed squash, tennis, hunting, fishing, cross-country skiing, boating, and golf. He found great joy in the outdoors and cherished time spent with his family. Hugh was a devout Roman Catholic and never missed a week of mass, even in his sickness. Like his mother before him, he valued "faith, family, and friends". Above all, Hugh was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. At Boston University, he met the love of his life, Joan Odenbach, and they shared 59 wonderful years of marriage.
Together, they raised four sons in Ipswich, Massachusetts, a town with deep roots in his family history. Hugh was immensely proud of his sons and was a constant presence at their sporting events and activities, coaching and encouraging them every step of the way. His love for sports was infectious, and his sons carried on his athletic legacy, playing at Ipswich High School, college, and even professional levels. Hugh's enthusiasm extended to his 14 grandchildren. He was their biggest fan, always eager to celebrate their accomplishments and share in their lives.
Hugh is survived by his beloved wife, Joan; his sons, Hugh (Laura), Michael (Annie), Gardy (Claire), and Jon (Ali); and his cherished grandchildren: Hannah, Brigid (Jordan), Ciara (Charlie), Deirdre, Claire, Lucy, Joanie, Mikey, Declan, Aidan, Aubrey, Tess, Fiona, Macklin, as well as his great-grandson, Calvin Hugh Thibault. He is also survived by his siblings, Margaret Joyce (Tom), Kathleen, William (Barbara), and Mark (Judy). He is predeceased by his parents, Hilda and Hugh O'Flynn Sr., his daughter-in-law, Naoko, and his brother-in-law, Malcolm.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Friday evening January 24th. from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Morris Funeral Home 45 North Main Street, Ipswich. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Hope Church 54 Linebrook Road, Ipswich at 10:00 AM on Saturday January 25th. followed by burial in Ipswich.
