MARBLEHEAD - Glover F. Broughton, a lifelong Marblehead resident, devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Marine, Mason, Shriner, sailor, golfer and friend, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2026 just weeks before his 98th birthday.

Born in Tampa Florida on July 12, 1928, he was the son of Glover H. "Dill" Broughton and Victoria Mezquita Broughton. At age four his family returned to Marblehead where he would spend the remainder of his life.

He graduated from Marblehead High School in 1946 before serving proudly in the United States Marine Corps aboard the USS Midway. He later earned an engineering degree from Wentworth Institute. In 2001, Wentworth recognized his distinguished career and accomplishments by awarding him an Honorary Bachelor of Science degree.

Glover spent much of his professional life with United Shoe Machinery Corporation, later Dynapert, where he worked in engineering and marketing, traveling throughout the United States and Europe. He also helped operate his family's well-known Marblehead restaurant, Dill's, serving as

president and manager while continuing his full-time career. Following retirement, he consulted for Sylvania and Panasonic and remained active through a variety of endeavors that reflected his lifelong willingness to help others.

He found great joy in golf, sailing, gardening, cooking and baking. His homemade Joe Froggers became a treasured family tradition. A lifelong student of naval history, he was especially proud to be a direct descendant of General John Glover and Captain Nicholson Broughton.

Freemasonry and the Shriners were among the great passions of his life. A member of Philanthropic Lodge for more than seventy years and Aleppo Shrine for sixty-five years, where he devoted decades to fellowship, charity, and service. He was widely remembered as the bass drummer in the

Aleppo Shrine Pipe Band and as Santa Claus for children at Shriners Hospitals.

In 2025, he received the honorary 33rd Degree of the Scottish Rite in recognition of his lifetime of dedication.

Above all, Glover cherished his family. He married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth "Betty" Atkins in 1952, sharing seventy years of marriage until her passing in 2022.

He was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth, son Douglas, sister Louise Lawler, and his parents.

He is survived by his sister Donna Thompson; his children, Sandra, Glover "Rick" and wife Alison, Christopher and husband John Myers, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Those who knew Glover will remember a gentleman of unwavering integrity, quiet humility, gentle humor and selfless service. He believed in showing up for others, whether family, neighbors, friends or strangers, and leaves a legacy of kindness, patriotism, brotherhood and love.

Visiting hours will be held Monday, July 6, 2026 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Eustis & Cornell of Marblehead, 142 Elm Street. A Masonic service and burial will take place Tuesday, July 7, at 11:00 a.m. at Waterside Cemetery, followed by a gathering at the Marblehead Masonic Hall.
