George A. Demeritt Obituary
Middleton - George Demeritt, beloved husband of Alice Bayne Demeritt and son of the late Harold and Edythe Demeritt, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2026. He was 90 years old. George and Bayne met when they were 11 years old, shared a beautiful friendship and later a marriage of 70 years. He loved spending time with family, gardening, playing golf and dedicated his life to serving others. He was a Page in the State Senate in 1954 and later served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War.
He attended the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy receiving his Master's degree in Pharmacy-Business Administration in 1963. He worked as a pharmacist, a pharmaceutical salesman, and an analyst for the R.A. Gosselin Company. In 1965 he became the Assistant Director of Pharmacy at Massachusetts General Hospital and was elected President of the Massachusetts Hospital Pharmacy Association.
George was a loyal, professional administrator throughout his career. In 1968 he became the first hospital administrator of the Shriners Burns Hospital in Boston and later became a hospital administrator for North Shore Children's Hospital in Salem, MA. In 1980 he returned to Boston as the Chief Operating Officer at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. He held that position for twenty years until he retired in 2000. During his tenure at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, he became a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator, a National Surveyor for the Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities, and served on the National Board of Governors of the Rehabilitation section of the American Hospital Association. He served on the Board of Trustees for the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Cape and Islands and was an active member of the Massachusetts Hospital Association. After a brief retirement he served six years as the Ombudsman Director for the North Shore Elder Services, an advocacy position whose mission is to protect the rights of residents in nursing homes.
In addition to dedication to his family and career, George was a proud member of the Salem Country Club. His love of the game began as a caddy for the club at age 11. He was a member of the Board of Governors, served on committees, wrote a monthly column for the club on the rules of golf and hit three holes-in-one. He was a J. V. golf coach at the St. John's Prep School for three years and was a Golf Rules Official with the Massachusetts Golf Association for over 20 years.
While living in Middleton, he was elected Chairman of the Board of the Masconomet Regional High School Committee and served on the Board of Health for over 20 years.
With the help of his coach, Tony Vargas, he became an avid indoor rower competing in 5 national races, winning 1st or 2nd place five times. In February 2026, he won 1st place in the Crash-B Sprint National Indoor Rowing Tournament in the 90-95 year-old category.
George is survived by his devoted wife, Bayne; son John Demeritt, and wife Michelle Demeritt, daughter Ann Demeritt, grandchildren; Julie, Melissa, Harrison and Grace and great grandchildren; Brannon, Izzy, Thea and Morgan. He also leaves behind two loving sisters; Beth Davidson and Susan Alesi and several nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert Demeritt and sister Judy Marchesini.
Visitation will be held at Conway Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn Street, Peabody, MA. on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, from 10 to 12 p.m. followed by a funeral service.
