Danvers - Gail Smith, 91, passed away peacefully on Monday July 13th following a brief illness.

Born in Salem, MA, on December 14, 1934, Gail was the daughter of the late Irene (McLarren) Smith and Wilbur H. Smith. She spent her early childhood in Salem before moving with her family to Beverly, MA in the late 1940s. A proud graduate of Beverly High School's Class of 1952, Gail followed in the footsteps of her beloved Aunt Helen by attending Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing in Providence, RI. Graduating in 1955, she embarked on a lifelong vocation centered on caring for others.

After a brief period at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, Gail answered another call to service, enlisting in the United States Air Force Nurse Corps in 1958. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, she served her country primarily in Waco, TX, and Anchorage, AK. Upon her discharge in 1961, she had attained the rank of First Lieutenant and returned home to Beverly.

Gail went on to enjoy a remarkable 45-year nursing career. She spent 25 years at Beverly Hospital, where her dedication, leadership, and clinical excellence led to her promotion to Assistant Director of Nursing. In 1986, she embarked on a new professional chapter, serving as Director of Nursing for several long-term care facilities throughout the Boston area. Throughout her career, Gail earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and patients alike for her compassion, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to care.

In 2005, Gail moved to Connecticut to be closer to her son, daughter-in-law, and three grandsons. Retirement did little to slow her down. She remained active in her community through organizations including Dress for Success and the Red Hat Society, and she was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Trumbull, Connecticut.

Known far and wide as "Auntie Gail," she cultivated friendships that spanned generations. Her infectious energy, quick wit, generosity, and youthful spirit made her both a trusted confidante and the life of any gathering. Whether family, friend, neighbor, or stranger, everyone who met Gail felt welcomed, valued, and cared for.

Gail is survived by her son, Jeffrey Scott Smith, and his wife, Joanne, of Sanbornville, NH; her cherished grandsons, Cameron McLarren Smith and his wife, CPT Madeleine Schneider, of Baltimore, MD; Ian Powers Smith of Waltham, MA; and Colin Anthony Smith of Cleveland, OH. She is also survived by her brother, Lawrence Smith, and his wife, Frances, of Beverly, MA, along with several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Lynda (Smith) Bushey, and brother-in-law, Edward Bushey.

The defining qualities of Gail's life were care, service, and love. As a young woman, she helped care for her younger sister and brother. As a nurse, she devoted decades to healing and comforting countless patients and families. As a daughter, she lovingly cared for her parents in their final years. As a mother and grandmother, she gave boundless affection, encouragement, and support. Her grandsons were the pride of her life, and she delighted in sharing adventures, creating memories, and spoiling them whenever possible. She also warmly embraced her granddaughter-in-law as an important part of her family.

Gail embraced life with enthusiasm and gratitude. She loved the outdoors and could often be found biking, hiking, kayaking, or cross-country skiing, and she was happiest when enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. An avid traveler, she never hesitated to drive hours to visit family and friends or journey farther afield to explore new places. Even into her eighties, she regularly traveled to Rhode Island to reunite with nursing school classmates whose friendships she treasured for a lifetime.

Gail lived fully, loved deeply, and inspired others through her example of resilience, independence, kindness, and joy. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched, and in the family and friends who were fortunate enough to know her.

A favorite phrase of Gail's was "Act Old Later", and these words by Dylan Thomas reflect Gail's indomitable spirit:

"Do not go gentle into that good night,

Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

Gail's funeral service will be at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, on Saturday July18th, at 4:00 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours prior to the service from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Burial will be at a later date.
