Durham - Gail Anne Berger, age 67, longtime resident of Peabody, passed away on Monday morning June 28, 2021, after complications from a stroke suffered in early May.

Born in Queens, New York, on January 6, 1954, she was the daughter of the late Alice (Montague) and William Berger. She was a graduate of Bishop Fenwick High School in Peabody, and then went on to receive a bachelor's degree from Trinity College in Washington, D.C., a master's from the Conway School of Landscape Design, and a master's from Harvard Divinity School. A talented and accomplished writer, Gail worked as a proposal writer in local environmental consulting firms. She also wrote many intelligent and inspirational essays and sermons. Having first studied fine art in college, Gail was also a highly gifted painter, illustrator, and sculptor, as well as the maker of remarkably fine stained glass pieces. She loved riding her bike long distances on the North Shore and other settings; she participated for many years in the Pan-Mass Challenge, a two-day, 192-mile bike ride to raise funds for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and for decades was a proud member of the riding group, the Northshore Cyclopaths of Salem. Gail relished entertaining family and friends, caring for her beloved cats, most recently Casper, cooking delicious dishes, reading, listening to music, and traveling widely in the United States and Europe.

In recognizing all her activities, accomplishments and talents, it's clear that the most impressive act of her life was the love and care she gave to both her mother and her father as they aged. Her great act of love became the center of her life at the most challenging times in her parents' lives, allowing them to live with dignity, and joyfully, something that the rest of her family will always admire her and be grateful to her for.

A loving and totally devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, she leaves behind her sister, Kathy Ockenfels and partner Ernie Arellano; her brother Don Berger and wife Cynthia Moss; her niece Natalie; and nephews Jackson and Peter Berger; as well as a great group of very special friends, many she's kept close since high school and college. She will live forever in the hearts and minds of all those she touched.

Her family and friends will hold a celebration of her wonderful life on Saturday, October 23, 2021, in her recent retirement community in Durham, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Habitat for Humanity International, the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless, or the Northeast Animal Shelter of Salem, Massachusetts.
