Ipswich - Ipswich - Fred Lewis Carter, 91, of Ipswich, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Saturday December 28th, 2024, while reminiscing about fond memories with his loving wife, Cathy Mackey-Carter, by his side. A devoted husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, brother, uncle, neighbor, and friend, Fred lived a full and remarkable life, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, hard work, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. Fred worked for much of his life as a general contractor, where his exceptional woodworking skills and natural desire to help others were evident. Known for his remarkable ability to fix just about anything, he was the go-to person for anyone in need of assistance. Fred's generosity knew no bounds.
Born in Reading, Massachusetts, on March 24, 1933, Fred was the son of Forrest and Bessie (Temple) Carter. He grew up in Wakefield, Massachusetts, alongside his brother Rick and sister Betty. Fred attended public school in Wakefield and later graduated from Holderness Academy in 1951. His family spent many summers in Ipswich on Great Neck, where he formed lifelong friendships and eventually chose to make Ipswich his permanent home. After graduating, Fred served as a communications specialist in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War, stationed overseas near enemy lines. Once the war ended, Fred returned home and married his first love, Mary Jane (Mulholland). Together, they built a beautiful home on Newmarch Street, where they raised their three children before adopting a fourth to complete their family.
Fred's deep love for his family was matched only by his strong work ethic. He was a devoted husband to Jane for 27 years and a proud father to their four children. Following Jane's passing in 1981, Fred embraced the role of stepfather with the same care and affection, building lasting relationships with his three stepdaughters and their families. He was also a mentor to many, offering his wisdom and dry humor through written "Words of Wisdom" at holidays and life milestones. Conversations with Fred were always memorable; he could be counted on to listen thoughtfully and offer advice that brightened any moment.
Fred will be remembered for his hands-on approach to life—whether building his family's home, a ski chalet, or simply being there when someone needed him. He was also a skilled pilot and accomplished sailor, journeying parts the Atlantic Ocean using celestial navigation with his friend Dr. David Jewett in 1976. Fred loved his life in Ipswich, where he gave back to the community in multiple ways, including serving as a Bank Director for the Ipswich Co-Operative Bank (now the Institution for Savings) for many years.
Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Cathy, with whom he shared over 40 years of marriage, and his children: Pam Demetrakopoulos and her husband Jim of Ipswich, MA; Beth LaRochelle and her husband Daniel "Bugg" of Rowley, MA; and Marylou Greenwood and her husband Dennis of Framingham, MA. He was predeceased by his only son, Forrest, who was married to Maureen (Wickstrom) Carter of Ipswich. Fred leaves behind nine grandchildren—Heidi, Erica, Melissa, Jessica, Gretchen, Brandon, Sarah, Annie, and Katie—and eleven great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy. He is also survived by his three step-daughters: Christine Dwyer and her husband Bill of Boston, MA; Ellen Rose and her husband Joe of Ipswich, MA; and Kathleen Gallanar and her husband Dan of Ipswich, MA, along with step-grandchildren Kelly, Jennifer, Michael, Will, Jessica, and Andrew; and was predeceased by his step-granddaughter, Stephanie.
A wake will be held at Morris Funeral Home, 45 N. Main Street, Ipswich, on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, from 3:00–6:00 pm. A funeral service will take place the following day, Thursday, January 2, at 10:00 am, also at the Morris Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service with full military honors and celebration of life to follow. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
Fred's family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all who helped make his final years filled with love, compassion, and support. Fred will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him. The family requests that any donations be made in Fred's memory to the Ipswich VFW Post 1093, 110 County Road, Ipswich, MA 01938.
