Swampscott - Dr. Edward Bailey, 81, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026, surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren.

The son of Louis and Lillian Bailey, he was a graduate of both the University of Vermont and the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He completed his Pediatric Residency at the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital. He proudly fulfilled his military obligation at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, SC as a Major and Director of Pediatrics at the hospital on base. Dr. Bailey began his civilian career at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA where he served for 26 years before accepting the position of Administrative Director of Mass General for Children at NSMC in Salem, MA. He shared his vast knowledge and insights as Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and other prestigious institutions. Dr. Bailey acted as a District Chair and served on numerous committees within the American Academy of Pediatrics for over 50 years. He was instrumental in establishing the Massachusetts Children's Trust Fund and, by Gubernatorial appointment, served as Board Chair for 15 years. Dr. Bailey, a founding member of the Salem Community Charter School, chaired the School Board as well. His passion and dedication for the safety, health and welfare of children has been recognized throughout the world.

He is survived by his wife Dena, his three children, Kerri Hark and her husband Christopher, Sean Bailey and his wife Jennifer, and Julie Bailey Blanche; in addition to his five grandchildren: Hannah, Tyler, and Blake Bailey and Ella and Arlie Blanche. Dr. Bailey will be remembered by so many for his devotion to his family and his countless decades of dedication to the children he cared for.

A memorial service was held at Congregation Shirat Hayam in Swampscott on Sunday, February 1, 2026. Interment is private.
