Dorothy Louise Jackson of Peabody, died peacefully at Sunrise at Gardner Park in Peabody on September 25, 2016, where she resided in recent years.
Dodie, as she was known and beloved by family and friends, was born in Worcester on May 26, 1924. She was the much loved daughter of Helen Martin Jackson and the Reverend Logan Earl Jackson.
She studied physics as an undergraduate and taught school in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for a time, then returned to finish a Masters in music at Boston University. While teaching at the elementary level, she also pursued vocal work as a professionally trained and paid soloist at churches on the North Shore, often accompanied by her devoted friend, the late Irene Morse. She visited her very special Aunt Florence many summers in Mexico City and traveled with her mother and Florence to Europe. Creative and business-minded, she wove her travel photographs into programs for which she sang songs from foreign cultures.
She always possessed a bright outlook, ready chuckle, sparkling optimism, and fierce independence that endeared her to all. Still enjoying life until her final illness, she enjoyed friends at the Peabody Senior Center where she founded the Low Vision Group and TOPS. She is survived by thirteen cousins with whom she greatly enjoyed staying in touch. She leaves many happy memories with family and friends. Dodie loved her supportive church family at the First Baptist Church in Wakefield.
Family and friends will celebrate her remarkable life in a memorial service at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at the First Baptist Church, 8 Lafayette Street, Wakefield, MA 01880-2305. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Massachusetts Baptist Charitable Society - www.massbaptistcharitable.org, the Ministers and Missionaries Benefit Board of New York-www.mmbb.org or her own church - fbcwakefield@juno.com.
