WILLISTON, VT: David Charles Morency, educator and beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend died surrounded by his family at his home in Williston, Vt., on Saturday, June 27, 2015, after a brief illness

Dave was born in Salem, Mass., on September 11, 1938 to the late Joseph and Irene Morency. He attended St. Mary’s Elementary School and St. John’s Prep., graduating in 1956.

Dave was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1957, and went on to become an officer in the United States Navy. He served with distinction on the surface ship USS Keppler (DD-765) until 1962, at which time he was selected by Admiral Rickover to be an officer in the Nuclear Submarine program. Dave served on the USS Lafayette (SSBN-616), and then on the USS Lapon (SSN-661), on which he was a member of the commissioning crew.

In 1969, Dave left the Navy to pursue a career in teaching. He received a Master’s degree in Mathematics at the University of Cincinnati, and began his teaching career at the University of Vermont in 1973, where he initiated an Operations Research course and taught Calculus and undergraduate classes. Dave also oversaw the College of Technology Co-op Program, and was involved in the Vermont Math Institute. He retired from UVM in 2001.

Dave’s many passions in life included fishing, woodworking, music, and following the Red Sox. Dave was extremely proud of his children and his four grandchildren. He enjoyed being with his family, relaxing and celebrating the important events in their lives.

Dave is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ellie, of Williston; son, David, his wife, Tracy Drake and their son, of Burlington, Vt.; son, Steve, of Williston; daughter, Elise Minadeo, her husband, John and their children of Essex, Vt.; daughter, Anne and her husband, Dave Mulleady, of Co. Longford, Ireland; his sister, Sylvia Wahl, her husband, Ted and his children, brother, Joseph and wife, Pauline, and their children, of Salem; his cousins, Irene Sullivan and Betty Rectanus and their families, and by other relatives and friends. He will be greatly missed.
