Daniel B. Kulak Obituary
Peabody - Daniel B Kulak, 83, lived and died where his heart was born. Growing up in West Peabody on Level Acres Farm, Dan worked with his parents Walter and Anne delivering eggs and selling locally famous corn. He graduated from Peabody High School in 1960 where he lettered in baseball before leaving Peabody to attend and graduate from the University of Notre Dame in 1964. Dan would marry his wife, Corinne A. (Dzierzak), also of Peabody while he furthered his education at Boston College Law School, graduating in 1967.
The young couple were living on the family farm when Daniel was called to serve in the First Aviation Brigade during the Vietnam Conflict. He attained the rank of Captain and served one year beginning in February 1969. He was awarded a Bronze Star for Service and two Oak Leaf Clusters. While overseas, Daniel received a telegram announcing the birth of his first child, Tara Lee, who would later follow her father's footsteps attending the University of Notre Dame.
Having grown up in Peabody, before all the roads were paved, Dan sought out and found a home in West Peabody. It was here that Dan firmly staked his ground and it is here where "he flew a flag in our yard, 'til the day that he died."
Dan was not simply devoted as a husband and father, he was devoted to his hometown. Working under Mayor Mavroulos in 1976, Dan secured the Brooksby Farm for the City of Peabody, preventing the land from being purchased for commercial development. This achievement was to become a defining moment, not just for the city, but also for the beginning of a lifelong career serving the citizens of the community as Assistant City Solicitor, until his retirement in 2008.
Daniel would also work with communities outside of Peabody specializing in negotiations but often stepping into other roles, working directly with local leaders emphasizing legal strategy in efforts to improve public services.
In a word, his word, was ...the word. Daniel developed a well respected rapport with professionals on both sides of the table, often working long hours, ultimately building a foundation of trust through fairness, honesty and patience.
It is with great sadness to witness the passing of a local boy who was grown to serve and protect.
In addition to leaving behind his wife, Corinne, and his daughter, Tara Lee Harvey, Dan also leaves his son, Chris Kulak, a retired firefighter who also served the City of Peabody. Additionally, Dan leaves four grandchildren and his older brother, Richard Kulak of Fairfax, VA, his wife Patricia and their 5 children.
Dan was loved, is loved and forever will be loved.
