Barbara Nickerson Obituary
Camden - Barbara Anne (Ruggles) Nickerson, 93, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2026, surrounded by family while in Hospice care at the Sussman House in Rockport, Maine.
Born on June 25, 1932, in Malden, MA, Barbara lived a life filled with love, dedication, and accomplishment. She resided her later years in Camden, ME. Most of her family years were spent in Danvers, Mass and then retirement was spent with Robert (Bob) in Lake Worth, Florida.
A proud graduate of Malden High School, Class of 1950, Barbara carried her strong work ethic and determination into every aspect of her life. As her children grew older and her home became quieter, she embraced new opportunities with enthusiasm. She began working part-time for Putnam Pantry Candies, managing merchandise showcases in fine restaurants across southeastern New England. Her natural flair for jewelry later led her to become Assistant Manager at Jade Tree Jewelers in the Liberty Tree Mall. Eventually, Barbara's entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly when she founded Essex Jade Co., her own business in Essex, MA.
Barbara was a devoted wife to her late husband, Robert Nickerson Sr., and a loving mother to her children and their spouses: Robert Nickerson Jr. and his wife Cindy, Gayle Lewis, James Nickerson, Russell Nickerson, and Amy Parker and her husband Miles. She also shared a close bond with her daughter-in-law Barbie Nickerson who provided exceptional care during her later years at Merry Gardens in Camden, ME. Her family was the center of her world and she poured her heart into creating a warm and nurturing home filled with love for everyone around her.
Barbara's talents extended far beyond her professional endeavors. She was an exceptional cook who took great pride in preparing memorable holiday dinners for her family. Her culinary skills were matched by her artistry in baking; she crafted stunning wedding cakes as part of a side business when her children were older. Additionally, Barbara was skilled in sewing and tailoring, a testament to her creativity and resourcefulness.
Barbara very much enjoyed vacationing with her family. Notable trips were taken to Hawaii, Colorado, Florida and throughout New England (especially Downeast, Maine).
A devout Catholic, Barbara was an active member of St. Mary's and St. Richard's Parish. She instilled strong values in her children through faith and example. Her unwavering commitment to her beliefs and community left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Barbara is survived by her children; sisters Elaine Russo of West Palm Beach, Florida, and Elsie Murphy of Montpelier, Vermont; as well as many other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews who cherished her friendship and guidance. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Robert Nickerson Sr.; son James Nickerson; sisters Jean Hulschser, Harriet Roketenetz, Shirley Fucci; and brother Herbert Ruggles Jr.
Those who knew Barbara will remember her as a kind-hearted woman whose warmth touched everyone she met. May the memory of her remarkable life bring comfort to all who mourn her passing. A Graveside Service will be held on June 13, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Village Cemetery, Dublin Road, South Thomaston, Maine.
