Text size

William C. Schoene, M.D., died on July 17, 2017, in Salem, Mass.
Dr. Schoene was born to Carl and Mary (Vesper) Schoene on December 9, 1937, in Columbus, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his dear companion, Robert Smith. Friends and colleagues, including his many trainees in the medical specialty of neuropathology, were his extended family that he cherished.
Reading, cooking, music, antiquing, and teaching were his passions. He was a member of the St. Botolph Club since 1985.
William received a B.S. degree from Capital University, Columbus, Ohio and received his M.D. degree from Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1963. From 1963 to 1969, he completed an internship at Georgetown University, residencies at Yale-New Haven Medical Center, Connecticut, and fellowships at Yale University School of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine, California, and Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1969, William was a pathologist for the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C. He was associate professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School, 1971 to 2011, and the chief of neuropathology, Brigham and Women’s Hospital 1971 to 1995. He was the director of combined Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Children’s Hospital training program in neuropathology, 1985 to 1995. William consulted for various hospitals and organizations, and contributed many articles to the medical literature throughout his extensive career.
Cherished student and colleague, Rebecca D. Folkerth, M.D., captured William with these words, "This dear, funny, exasperating, wry, stubborn, iconoclastic man really lived life on his own terms. A keen observer not just of human brain disease, but of the human condition as a whole, his sly philosophizing lightened up many a moment (if you were a willing conspirator!). “When I am the great dictator,” he would intone in his operatic style, “there will be no telephones or computers!”
William will be laid to rest with his family at Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio. A Celebration of Life will be planned for early October in the Boston area.
