Walter J.'s Story
Walter J. Keenan, 82, of Salem, died Sunday, April 9, 2017, at Rosewood Nursing Center surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Frank and Evangeline (Rennehan) Keenan. He was raised and educated in Boston and was a graduate of Boston Latin High School. Walter continued his education receiving his Bachelors degree in Engineering from Wentworth Institute.
An honorably discharged veteran, Mr. Keenan proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War.
Upon his return from serving his country, Walter began his professional career with United Shoe Machinery Company, as a Mechanical Engineer, where he was known for his dedication and attention to detail for over 40 years.
A longtime resident of the city of Salem, Walter was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family and will be deeply missed by his family and friends and especially his canine companion, Rocco. He was an avid Boston sports fan and enjoyed reading in his spare time and was a member of the U.S.M.C. Quarter Century Club.
Walter is survived by his daughter, Susan Keenan of Salem; his three sons, Gary Keenan and his wife, Mary of Salem, Walter Keenan, Jr. of Salem and Brian Keenan of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a grandson, William Keenan; and great-granddaughter, Amelia Palm-Keenan; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John and Robert Keenan.
His funeral service will be held graveside in Greenlawn Cemetery, Orne St., Salem, Thursday, April 13 at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours will be held in The O’Donnell Funeral Home, 46 Washington Sq.
