Verna M.'s Story
Verna Mae (Foote) (Vatcher) Amend, 93, born in Medford to John and Mary Ellen Foote, peacefully passed away on February 2, 2017.
Verna was predeceased by two husbands, William E. Vatcher and Karl E. Amend and is survived by her three children, William Vatcher and wife, Lorraine of Wilmington, Robert Vatcher and wife, Patricia of Bonita Springs, Fla. and Meriam ‘Lee’ Bednarczyk and friend, Kenneth Caron of Waltham.
Verna was one of five children and was preceded in death by three of her siblings and is survived by her youngest sister, Rita Breen of Blufton, S.C. She was aunt to many nieces and nephews, Nana to 11 grandchildren, Nannie to 14 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandmother to two great-great-granddaughters; we will always carry her memory in our hearts.
Verna was witty and enjoyed singing old tunes and making people smile. Her life passion was spent with her prize show horse Lady’s Man, her many Boxer dogs, her love for fashion, enjoying life while dancing up a storm to her favorite country music and being with her large family. She worked as an elderly care giver to elder men and women in her home, one at a time for private care and later in life worked for the State of Massachusetts as a dietary worker and then in direct care of developmentally disabled adults.
Her graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2017 in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, 185 Lake St., Peabody. Wesley Foote, Jr., her nephew, will officiate the ceremony. The family wishes to thank Hunt Nursing Home of Danvers and Care Dimensions for her end of life care as well as the many friends she developed while at Hunt Nursing Home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Verna’s name to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123. Online condolences may be made at
