Sidney “Sy”'s Story

Mr. Sidney “Sy” Paul, (Sotiris Polychronopoulos) 93, of Salem, died Sunday, October 8, 2017 at Lahey Clinic in Peabody following a brief illness.
Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Antonio and Bessie (Eliopoulos) Polychronopoulos. He was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of Salem High School.
An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II on board the U.S.S Windsor.
Upon his return from serving his country, Sy began his professional career with the United States Postal Service. He had been stationed at the Salem Post Office in Riley Plaza for over 40 years until the time of his retirement.
A lifelong resident of the City of Salem, Mr. Paul was an ardent Boston Red Sox fan. He enjoyed spending his time bowling and was a talented artist using the medium of water color and acrylic paints to express his artistic vision. His favorite past time were games of chance and he was occasionally blessed with lady luck at his side. He lived a long and full life. Above all else, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends and will be deeply missed.
Sy is survived by his nieces and nephew, Valerie, George and his wife Tammy, Katherine, Joanne and Francine, his great nephew, Christopher and extended family and many dear friends. He was the brother of the late Labrine Murphy, Stella Rezendes, Virginia Kipouras and George, Michael and Frank Polychronopoulos.
Sy’s family would like to extend great appreciation to his caregivers, Diane at home, his nurse, Susan and the staff at Davenport 5, Salem Hospital and the staff at Pilgrim Rehab and Nursing Home. They are eternally grateful and forever thankful.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service which will be held in The O’Donnell Funeral Home 46 Washington Sq., (at Salem Common) Salem, Friday, Oct. 13th at 11 a.m. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. As requested visiting hours omitted. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Sidney’s memory to the Salem Hospital, C/O North Shore Medical Center Development, 81 Highland Ave., Salem, MA 01970.
