Sarah L.'s Story
Sarah L. (Russo) Mele, 90, formerly of Watertown, wife of the late John A. Mele, died Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at the Care One Health Care Center in Peabody.
Born and raised in Watertown, she was the daughter of the late Dominic and Rose (Cotoni) Russo. She received her education in the Watertown school system and graduated from secretarial school in Boston.
Mrs. Mele was employed for many years as an executive assistant to Ken Olsen, the founder, president and chairman of Digital Equipment Corporation in Maynard, until the time of her retirement in 1986. She also worked as a bookkeeper for her husband’s building contracting business for many years.
Mrs. Mele had a love for animals, especially cats. She also volunteered for many years with the Special Olympics.
She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Sandler and her husband, Brad of Salem; a son, John Mele and his wife, Norma of Tennessee; four grandchildren, Nathan and Kevin Sandler and Christine and Joanne Mele; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Anna Born of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Dominic Russo.
