Robert "Bo"'s Story
Robert “Bo” Tierney, age 66, passed away on the evening of Tuesday, September 26, 2017. Robert was born on April 3, 1951 in Salem, and raised by his father John Tierney and his mother Gertrude Eagan.
Growing up in Salem, Robert attended the local schools with attending Salem High School and graduating in 1969 as the president of his class. He went onto attend Salem State College to pursue a career in education.
After graduating from college, Robert began his career at Bishop Fenwick High School in 1978 as a social studies teacher as well as a hockey and golf coach. Robert’s great success on the ice and the green for 36 years put him in a positon to become the Athletic Director of Bishop Fenwick Athletics. After 10 years of being the Athletic Director, Robert retired as the head of athletics at Bishop Fenwick to continue his career as the Assistant Coach of the Peabody High School Hockey Team. He was later inducted into the MIAA Hockey Hall of Fame.
While Robert wasn’t spending his time in the school system, he was a member of the Bass Rocks Golf Club in Gloucester.
Robert is survived by his brother, Richard Tierney and wife Diane of Newburyport; his brother, Jack Tierney and wife Caryl of Malone, N.Y.; his niece, Jennifer Bosely and husband Charles; his niece, Amy Trudeau; his niece, Moira Poitras and husband, Scott; his niece, Jillian Dawson and husband, Andrew; his nephew, Josh Tierney and wife, Megan; and his nephew, Ryan Tierney and wife Meredith. Robert is also survived by a large extended family including the Zegarowski family.
Visiting hours will take place on Sunday, October 1, 2017 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home, located on 85 Federal St., Salem. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 2, 2017 at 10 a.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home. Following the services, internment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
