Richard I.'s Story

Richard I. Butler, 83, of Salisbury (formerly of Salem and Rowley) and beloved husband of the late Dolores L. (Brunet) Butler, died in Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport on Monday, May 8, 2017, after a brief illness. Their marriage of over 60 years was truly a love story that will continue in the heavens as they are now reunited and dancing together again.
Born in Salem, Mass., he was the son of the late Harlan and Beatrice (White) Butler. He was raised and educated in Salem, graduating Salem High School in 1951. Later on, he attended Northeastern University. Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Randolph as a Fireman. He was employed as a draftsman for ITEK Corporation in Waltham, American Science and Engineering in Cambridge and, finally General Electric Riverworks in Lynn until retirement. In the 1960s, he was part of the Peabody Cavaliers and Musketeers Drum & Bugle Corps as an assistant during their traveling and attended the 1964 World's Fair in New York with the corps. He loved playing golf during the summer months and bowled in the winter. Both Richard and Dolores traveled with each other and their friends to places like Las Vegas, Bermuda, Aruba, Hawaii and Alaska during retirement. He loved spending time with his family and was especially proud of his grandchildren and his great grandchildren all whom he adored and enjoyed attending their games and events.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Raymond Butler and Robert Butler, both of Florida, and is survived by his older brother, Russell Butler of Seabrook, N.H. He is also survived by his three children, Richard Butler and his wife, Maryann of Groveland, Deborah MacKenzie and her husband, John of Seabrook, N.H., and Laurie Gello and Greg of Seabrook, N.H.; seven grandchildren, Richard Butler, Jr. and his wife, Ashley of Groveland, Rachel Butler and her fiancé, Eric Kilgour of Haverhill, Marc MacKenzie and his wife, Lauren of Saco, Maine, Krista MacKenzie of Hampton, N.H., Tracy Roy and her husband, Joe of Hampton, N.H., Joe Gello and his wife, Victoria of Salem, Mass., and Melissa Gello of Seabrook, N.H.; and four great-grandchildren, Brandon Roy, Arianna Roy, McKenna Bell and Olivia Edwards.
Visiting hours will be held at Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (corner of North St.), Salem, MA, on Monday, May 15, 2017, from 4 to 8 p.m. and the funeral services will be held at Murphy's Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, 57 Orne St., Salem, MA.
