Text size

Mr. Patrick ‘Pat’ Fanning, 66 of Salem, died unexpectedly Saturday, April 1st, 2017 at his home.
Born in Salem, he was one of eight children of the late Richard ‘Dick” Fanning and Mary (Wright) Fanning. Pat was raised and educated in Salem graduating from Salem High School, Class of 1968. An honorably discharged veteran he served his country as a member of the United States Coast Guard. Proud of his service and his fellow veterans, he volunteered his time to help and honor other veterans as a member of the funeral honors team that rendered military honors at the funeral ceremonies of fallen veterans.
Employed as a union truck driver, Pat had worked as a delivery driver for Fed-Ex and for several home heating oil and propane companies on the Northshore for many years until the time of his retirement.
Pat was a longtime member at the Union Club in Beverly and at the P.L.A.V Post 55 of Salem. An avid Boston sports fan throughout his life with a special love of baseball and golf. A man of routine, Pat could be found each morning before dawn at the gym for his daily workout. In the summer at Winter Island beach sitting in his chair with all ‘the regulars’ reading the paper, sharing stories and enjoying nature’s beauty. Dotty and Ray’s restaurant was to Pat what Cheers was to Norm. Everybody knew his name, he had his favorite seat and they knew how to serve up a hearty meal.
Above all else, family was always first with Pat and he showed his love by supporting his family in all their endeavors. A loving, devoted grandpa, who could be counted on to be at every sports game and school event for Serena and Mason. His children, nieces and nephews cherish the entertaining childhood stories as told by Pat. He was genuine, caring, giving and deeply loved by his family and lifetime friends who will be deeply missed.
