Patricia Ann Gibeley “Pat” (Oliveira), 76, passed away on Monday, April 3, at the University of Miami Hospital in Miami, Fla., after a courageous battle with lung disease. Pat was born on February 20, 1941, in New Bedford, Mass. She was the daughter of Eugene and Helen Oliveira and the sister of Ronald Oliveira (all predeceased).
Pat was a longtime resident of Salem, Mass., but spent the last 20 years dividing her time between her two homes in Ogunquit, Maine, and Naples, Fla. She graduated from Fairhaven High School in Fairhaven, Mass., and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She received her Masters degree in Education from Salem State College.
She taught Physical Education in the Peabody school system for over 30 years, working alongside her loving husband, Robert Gibeley, who was both a teacher and Principal at the Higgins Middle School.
Pat had a true gusto for life. She was active in sports as both a player and a coach over the years -- volleyball, softball, basketball, tennis and golf. She could often be found on the golf course at both Foxfire Country Club in Naples, Fla., or at the Cape Neddick Country Club in Cape Neddick, Maine. In her retirement, she added even more friends to her long list. She taught many people mahjong and bridge at her country club in Florida and for several years was active in planning community events and activities for residents in her capacity of as an Officer on the Board of Directors of the Foxfire Community Association.
Pat was a creative and artistic soul, and was known for the engaging games and activities she created to bring friends and family together for times of great laughter, fun and joy. Conversation was always lively, fun and interesting with Pat. She loved gardening and the beach spending innumerable hours tending to her gorgeous rock gardens in Maine and walking the beaches shell hunting and playing with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of almost 50 years, Robert Gibeley; her oldest son, Peter Nowell of Hanover, N.H.; her son, Marc Gibeley and his wife, Marnie of Boxford, Mass., and their sons, Ryan of Tacoma, Wash., Nathan of Annapolis, Md., and William of Boxford, Mass. She is survived by her youngest son, Michael Gibeley of Portsmouth, N.H., and his three children, Michael, Jr. of Elon, N.C., Courtney of Norton, Mass., and Nicholas of Topsfield, Mass. She is survived by her many thoughtful and loving friends in Maine, Florida and Massachusetts. She will be missed beyond measure.
The Memorial service will be held at the Foxfire Country Club, Naples, Fla., on Friday, April 7, at 10 a.m. There will be an additional celebration of life sometime in the summer in Ogunquit, Maine.
