Norma M.'s Story
Norma MacMullen Lord, a longtime resident of Marblehead, passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2016, at Brooksby Village in Peabody at the age of 89. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Ross A. and Annie Laurie (Holt) MacMullen. Norma was raised and educated in Yonkers, N.Y., and was a graduate of Roosevelt High School with the Class of 1945. She went on to attend Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa., where she earned her Bachelors degree in Home Economics in 1949. She earned her Master’s degree in Home Economics Education from Framingham State College in 1972.
She married Daniel F. Lord in New York on April 8, 1950, and settled in Marblehead. The couple spent over 56 years in marriage, until Daniel’s passing in May of 2006. Norma spent time as a homemaker, raising and caring for her family, until going to work in Revere High School as a Home Economics teacher. She dedicated 26 years of her life to teaching, until her retirement in 1994.
Norma was a member of the Old North Church in Marblehead, where she was also a 50 year member of the church choir. She was a member of the American Sewing Guild, the American Home Economics Association and the Council on Aging. Her later years found her volunteering many hours to cooking for the homeless in a Salem homeless shelter.
Norma leaves her children, Karen L. Cunningham and her husband, William of Pittsfield, Maine, Jonathan K. Lord and his wife, Jane (Cox) of Savage, Minn., and Alan Lord and Trisha Petrozzelli of Salem, N.H.; six grandchildren, James D. Lord, Ross A. Lord, Alexander G. Cunningham, Kira E. Lord, Meredith R. Lord and Connor M. Lord; four great-grandchildren, Caleb H. Lord, Andrew M. Lord, Wyatt N. Lord and Kateleigh R. Lord; a brother-in-law, Edward Putzier; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents and husband, Norma was preceded in death by her siblings, Jean Putzier and William H. MacMullen.
A memorial service will be held on May 6, at the Old North Church, 35 Washington Street, Marblehead.
