Meredith Gilman's Story
Daughter of the late Ruth Waters Upton and Herbert Sargent Gilman, Meredith Gilman Clisby, alias Duff, Murphy Duff, Mimi and other affectionate nicknames, slipped away peacefully at the age of 71, surrounded by her family after a two-year battle with cancer.
Beloved grandmother, mother and friend, she is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Roy Edward Clisby; devoted son, Josiah Sargent Clisby and his wife, Carra of Andover; adored grandson, Max Sargent Clisby; and also by nieces, Allegra Sanderson Pawlowski of Fairhaven and Samantha Carroll of Riverside, Conn.; a cousin, Elisabeth Thomas of Georgetown; and her sister, Lee Gilman Robinson and her husband, Paul of Dorchester.
She was a 1964 graduate of Marblehead High School and Chandler College for Women. For 36 years she was employed as Distribution Manager for Irresistibles.
Meredith, like her mother before her, loved working in her perennial garden in the shadow of Abbot Hall and in the company of her cherished terrier, Buoy. She was a dynamic presence in the lives of many, a faithful keeper of family recipes, traditions, and the orchestrator of family gatherings. Many devoted high school friends from near and far regularly gathered at the Clisby house to share a lobster dinner, a glass of wine and hilarious memories. She had a vibrant independent personality and possessed an indefatigable energy, and a generous spirit.
A lifelong resident of Marblehead, but born in Salem, she couldn’t legitimately call herself a “Header," but her heart belonged to Marblehead. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
A Memorial Service will be held in the Old North Church, 35 Washington Street, Marblehead, on Saturday, February 18, at 11 a.m. All friends and family are welcome. Meredith’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to all those devoted caregivers and dear friends for their loving support during her illness. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations in Meredith’s name to All Care Hospice, 210 Market Street, Lynn, MA 01901. Arrangements by Eustis and Cornell of Marblehead.
