Margery (Speris)'s Story
Margery (Speris) Costas, 91, wife of the late Peter C. Costas, died peacefully Thursday afternoon January 26, 2017, surrounded by her family. Born in Ipswich on April 10, 1925, she was the daughter of the late William and Stella (Chelios) Speris.
Mrs. Costas was a lifelong member of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Ipswich. She was raised and educated in Ipswich. On June 1, 1947, she married her husband, Peter in Ipswich and the couple moved to Hamilton where they raised their family. Mrs. Costas would remain a resident of Hamilton until 2014, when she moved back to Ipswich. She was a waitress at the Village Restaurant in Essex for 30 years. Her passion was cooking including Saturday night “pickings.” She was most passionate for her extended family. Mrs. Costas was predeceased by her husband, Peter on February 12, 2003.
Mrs. Costas is survived by her two children and their spouses, Charles and Jean Costas of Sandy Hook, Conn., Sheila and Scott Stone of Rowley; her two grandchildren and their spouses, Nicole and Daniel Boyd of Sterling Heights, Mich., Christopher and Allison Costas of Ridgefield, Conn. She is also survived by her three great-grandchildren, Nikolas, Brianna and Gavin; her sister, Constance Mooney of Orinda, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. She was "Yiayia" to Matthew and Katelyn Berry of Hamilton; and Daniel, Molly and Megan Berry of Ipswich. She also leaves her cherished cat, Cabbie. Mrs. Costas was also predeceased by her sister, Claire Neofotistos and her brother, George Speris.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 31, at 10 a.m. at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 8 Lafayette Road, Ipswich. Burial will follow in the Hamilton Cemetery, 623 Bay Road, Hamilton. Visiting hours are Monday (today), January 30, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Morris Funeral Home, 45 North Main Street, Ipswich.
