Lorena Frances's Story
Lorena Frances (Barclay) Waterman, 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, in her residence at Brooksby Village in Peabody. She was the widow of Dwight M. Waterman of Marblehead, who predeceased her in 2001.
A true Marbleheader by birth and in spirit, she was born on June 1, 1921, the youngest daughter of the late Charles W. Barclay and Rena T. (Hammond) Barclay. She graduated from Marblehead High School in the Class of 1939. She and several classmates celebrated enduring friendships during their golden years with monthly lunch gatherings across the North Shore.
Following her studies, Mrs. Waterman worked for several years at GTE Sylvania in Salem. She left this employment to become a devoted homemaker and an accomplished seamstress, fashioning clothes, draperies and upholstery for her own home as well as local clients. She also served the Marblehead school system as a recess aide at the Elbridge Gerry School and a lunchroom aide at Marblehead High School. A longtime congregant of the Old North Church in Marblehead, she was a dedicated member of the Old North S.O.S. Club.
After moving to Brooksby Village in 2002, she enjoyed taking part in the community’s Protestant Council and social groups celebrating her Scottish heritage and her hometown of Marblehead. Most recently, she took great pleasure in the scheduled activities of Brooksby’s Intermissions program.
Mrs. Waterman is survived by her only daughter, Jill P. Waterman of New York, N.Y., and many nieces and nephews across multiple generations. She was particularly close to the children of her siblings and relished their time spent together, especially at the old homestead on Moose Hill in Maine. Mrs. Waterman was predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Franklin C. Barclay, Lois Barclay Walton, John H. Barclay, Nathan T. Barclay, Priscilla Barclay and Lester I. Barclay, as well as many other relatives and countless friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 13, in the chapel at Brooksby Village in Peabody. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm Street in Marblehead. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to both events. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to support the hospice services of Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan Street, B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
