Commander Leon Gilman, born in Hartford, Conn., on February 6, 1917, died on Monday, July 10, 2017.
He resided for many years in the Brightview community in Danvers. Leon graduated from Trinity College, class of 1939. After his military service in WWII and beyond, he worked for many years in the insurance industry. He leaves his three children, Hannah (and Ted O’Brien) of Marblehead, David and Corrine of Eliot, Maine, and Jene Dickerson of Inverness. Fla.; five grandchildren, six great grand-children, and two great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Velma; his sister, Jennie Oshman, his brother, Bernard, and his parents, Morris and Annie.
A memorial service will be held at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street, (corner of North St.), in Salem, on Saturday, July 22, at 2 p.m. He and his wife will be buried in the Bourne National Cemetery in Bourne, MA. Burial will be private. Donations in Leon’s name may be made to the Christian Renewal Church, 556 Cabot Street, Beverly, MA 01915.
