Koula (Kamberelis) Frangos, 97, wife of the late John W. Frangos, former owner of the Commodore Restaurant in Beverly with his late brothers Mike, Charlie and Spero, with whom she shared 39 wonderful years of marriage. She passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at Ledgewood Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Beverly.
Born and raised in Haverhill, she was the daughter of the late Theodore Kamberelis and Evdokia (Voulalas) Karageorge and her husband, Michael Karageorge. She received her education at the Hellenic American and public schools in Haverhill.
She was a resident of Beverly for 19 years prior to moving to Wenham in 1977. Sadly, after three years in their new home, her husband suffered a stroke and she became a devoted caretaker to him for seventeen years until he passed away in 1997. She welcomed friends and relatives to their lovely home and John enjoyed their company immensely while being homebound. Before his stroke, they traveled widely, including to Greece. She and John graciously sponsored Nick Frangioudakis, a 16-year old male relative from Crete in Greece who lived with them for many years.
Koula was active in community and civic organizations including Beverly Hospital, St. Vasilios Church in Peabody, St. George Church in Ipwsich, The Holy Apostles Church in Haverhill and local garden clubs.
Surviving her are her devoted husband's sisters, Irene F. Decoulos and her husband John J. Decoulos of Boxford, who hosted many holidays for John and Koula, and Mary F. Zambelis of Beverly, as well as her special sister-in-law, Brenda Frangos of Beverly, Georgia Frangos of Lynn and Iris Frangos of Wenham. Also surviving her are many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Her niece, Cindy Kamberelis and nephew Bill Frangos were especially helpful to her in her later years as she chose to continue living in her home.
She is also survived by her godchildren, Bob Sarbanis of N.H., Joanne Decoulos Hight of Rowley, Mass. and Barbara Frangos of Florida.
Koula was the sister of the late George Kamberelis and his wife Polly, and Nicholas Kamberelis and his late wife Teresa.
She also had an enduring relationship with her husband's late brothers and their wives, Anthony Frangos and his wife Mary, their late daughter Dorothea, Peter Frangos and his wife Artemis, Everett Frangos, George Frangos and brother-in-law Harry Zambelis. The extended Frangos family embraced her during her long life.
Her funeral service will be celebrated at the Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church, 156 Winter Street, Haverhill, Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, Friday, February 3, 2017 from 2 to 5 p.m. Burial in the Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill, MA will follow the church service.
