John R.'s Story
John R. Sousa, 73, of Peabody, died Friday evening at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Catherine (Carreiro) Sousa, with whom he shared over 52 years of marriage.
Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late John C. and Lucy (Brooks) Sousa. He was a lifelong resident of Peabody and a graduate of Peabody High School. He then attended North Shore Community College and received his Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice.
John was employed with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Trial Court Division for over 34 years and retired as assistant chief at the Peabody District Court.
John loved being on the water and around boats for years at Salem Harbor and Half Way Rock in Gloucester. He enjoyed fishing and loved being in his garden and yard and always “out there looking for a pine needle on the ground” as he often would say. However, his favorite endeavor was spending quality time with his grandsons and sharing in all of their activities.
He was a member of the Portuguese American War Veteran’s Post 1 Club, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division XI and at Our Lady of Help, all in Peabody.
Besides his wife, Catherine, he is survived by his sons, Scott and his wife, Karen Sousa of Peabody and JR Sousa and his partner, Michele Maugeri of Florida; his daughters, Pamela Sousa-Atwood of Wakefield and Kathleen Sousa and her husband, John Coletta of Rockport. He is also survived by his three grandsons, Timothy and Justin Sousa of Peabody and Jonas Sousa Coletta of Rockport. He was predeceased by his sister, Eleanor Sousa.
His funeral will be celebrated on Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed his Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Ann’s Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
