John Richard Morris, 62, of Guilford, Conn., formerly of Salem, Mass., passed away peacefully on March 30 surrounded by family and friends after a sudden illness. John is survived by his loving husband, Stephen Thomas of Guilford, Conn.; his brother, William and wife, Patti of Peabody, Mass.; his brother, Stephen and wife, Linda of Boxford, Mass.; and his brother, Jimmy of Maine. John is survived by nieces and nephews, Mackenzie, Christopher, Donna, Elizabeth, Sarah, John, Nicholas, Cailin and Claire. John was predeceased by his mother, Patricia, and father, Joseph of Salem, Mass.; and his niece, Peyton of Boxford, Mass.
John attended St. James school in Salem, Mass. He attended Salem High School and Northeastern University, where he graduated in 1978 with a BS in business administration. John worked for the Metropolitan Insurance Companies, John Hancock Insurance Companies, and the McGraw-Hill Publishing Company. He eventually was a principle of the Olde Salem Insurance Agency.
Later in his career, John worked as a claims adjuster and accountant at several firms throughout Boston and Connecticut including Crawford and Company, Comcast, Nationwide Security and Yale University School of Medicine.
John was a passionate traveler, visiting much of the Unites States as well as Europe. His favorite destinations included Aruba, Mikonos, Paris, Amsterdam, San Francisco, and New York City. John loved visiting cafes throughout the world but will forever be loyal to Dunkin Donuts coffee.
Throughout his life he enjoyed many activities such as skiing, cooking big Sunday dinners each week, spending time at the beach, reading true crime novels, collecting cooking books, and attending yard sales and craft shows.
John was beloved by many including his husbands family, Caroline Thomas and John Huh of California, Jennifer and her wife, Andrea of Melrose, and Bill and his partner, Gretchen of Merrimack, N.H. John was loved as a son by his deceased in-laws, Grace and Bill Thomas. John was predeceased by his loving cats, Mitsy, Snickers, and the other love of his life, Coconut.
John was a loyal and giving friend. Jos, Gilbert, Peggy, Jim, Bruce, Stephen, Carla, Tani, Brian and Joe enjoyed countless dinners, plays, and explorations together. He was also a good friend of Bill W. for the past 30 years.
John was a wonderful husband and the 24 years of joy that Stephen and John spent together brightened the world. We will miss his laughter, kindness, and love. An afternoon of celebration l will be held on Saturday, April 8. There will be visitation at the Guilford Funeral Home from 1 to 3 p.m. followed by a celebration of life memorial at First Congregational Church of Madison, 22 Meeting House Lane, Madison, at 3:30 p.m. Please come celebrate his life.
