John "Jack"'s Story
Mr. John David “Jack” Dowdell, of Salem, died peacefully at home in Kissimmee. Son of the late John James and Hilda (Dupray) Dowdell, Jack graduated from Salem H.S. and served in the U.S. Army Reserve and U.S. Navy. He worked with early computers at various companies, retiring in 1990.
Jack played softball, volunteered in elder services, sang in a chorus at nursing homes, and enjoyed walking in Salem Willows Park. He spent his final years in FL with family and friends. Jack lived with Alzheimers, but began each day with a smile and a song. He cruised Emerald Lake by pontoon boat, amused everyone he met, and above all, did all he could to help others.
Jack is survived by two daughters, Megan Dowdell of Los Angeles, Calif. and Sharon Dowdell Tully and her husband, Jeff Tully of Littleton; grandchildren, Paige Tully and Hope Tully; brother-in-law, Edward Nolan of Danvers; and many nieces and nephews, including Jennifer McPhee and Jeffrey Goldberg, who managed his care after Jack’s sister, Sandra Dowdell, passed away in 2015. Jack was also brother of the late Cynthia Burns, Jane Nolan, and Patricia Saffer, as well as brother-in-law of the late Joseph Burns and Leon Saffer. Jack was father to beloved son, John James Dowdell, who died in 1999.
Service to be held at Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem on September 15 at 10:30 a.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made in Jack’s memory to Home Base Veteran & Family Care-MGH, 125 Nashua Street, Boston, MA 02114.
