Joan Bullock's Story
Mrs. Joan Bullock McShane, 88, beloved wife of the late Charles E. McShane, died Saturday, July 1, 2017, at the Herrick House in Beverly, Mass. surrounded by her family.
Born in Media, Pa., she was the daughter of Anthony N. and Anne (Lumley) Bullock.
She graduated from Notre Dame Catholic Girls High School in Moylan-Rose Valley, Pa., Class of 1946, and continued her education, earning a Bachelor of Science from Temple University in 1950.
She met the love her of her life while riding the train in Philadelphia. Their courtship blossomed into a marriage of 61 years with four children and moves to Reading, Pa., Ardmore, Pa., Milford, Conn., finally settling in Beverly in 1968. Joan remained home with her children and was highly engaged in all of their activities through both school and church. Her strong duty of volunteerism lead to her involvement in Visiting Nurses Association of the North Shore (of which she was a board member), St. Vincent DePaul Society, The Good Friday Walk, The Circle of the Blind, The Lothrop Club, Meals on Wheels, Beverly Republican Committee Member and working the polls on election day.
She was not only a homemaker but a caregiver. Over the years into the family home she welcomed her mother, father and Ms. Murphy (a dear friend of her mother). She also was the Beacon Street elder care specialist – Roger, Frank, Tina, Terry, and Jenny were all under Joan’s watchful eye at one time or another. Her compassionate and loving nature led to a career later in life at the Hunt Nursing & Retirement Home in Danvers where she worked as an activities coordinator.
Mrs. McShane’s strong faith guided every aspect of her life. She was a daily communicant and active member of Saint John the Evangelist Church. She was heavily involved in all aspects of school and parish life for over 40 years.
She was predeceased by her loving husband with whom she shared 61 years of marriage. She is survived by her children, Charles E. McShane, Jr. and his wife, Sherry of Shallotte, N.C., Anne McShane Bloomfield and her husband, Dennis of Fallon, Nev., Michael A. McShane and his wife, Maura of Beverly, Mary McShane Bertucci and her husband, James of Beverly; 10 grandchildren, Meaghan McShane Wagner and her husband, Forest of Troutville, Va., Dr. Matthew McShane of Chicago, John McShane of Roanoke, Va., Michael Bloomfield of Spring Creek, Nev., Christopher Bloomfield and his wife, Cheyanna of Fallon, Nev. and Joshua Bloomfield of Fallon, Nev., Michael and Ryan McShane of Beverly and Brynn and Andrew Bertucci of Beverly; one great-grandson, Anderson Wagner of Troutville, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Anthony and Lorraine Bullock of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Claire McShane of Lansdowne, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her brother-in-law, Thomas J. McShane.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church, 111 New Balch St., Beverly, Thursday, July 6 at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Visiting hours at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly on Wednesday, July 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be at Saint Thomas the Apostle in Glen Mills, Pa.
