Jeanne E.'s Story
Jeanne E. (Hullings) Mathews, 87, wife of the late Charles F. Mathews, Jr., died Monday morning, February 13, 2017, in her home surrounded by her loving family after a short illness. Born in Mount Holly, N.J., on June 23, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Lester E. and Elizabeth W. (Shinn) Hullings.
Mrs. Mathews and her husband were married in Manchester on New Years Eve in 1954. They would then become longtime residents of Beverly. She was employed at the former Zayre and later Ames of North Beverly for many years. Mrs. Mathews enjoyed working outside in her garden, and she loved reading. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles on January 18, 1997.
Mrs. Mathews is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Jim Burke of Beverly and her granddaughter, Lindsay Burke, also of Beverly, whom she idolized. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Eileen Haines of Appleton, Wisc., and several in-laws, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Mathews was also predeceased by three siblings, Shirley Schaffer, Elwood “Wo” Hullings and Beverly Mathews.
A funeral service will be held Friday, February 17, at 10 a.m. in the Morris Funeral Home, 45 North Main Street, Ipswich. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Pine Street, Manchester-by-the-Sea. Visiting hours to be held on Thursday, Feb. 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
