James E.'s Story

James Edward Bishop, passed away on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at 84. Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, JoAnn Bishop; his four children, Elizanne Gass and her husband, Albrecht Gass, Jamie Bishop and her husband, Vince Kuhlman, James A. Bishop and his wife, Leah Glowacki- Bishop, and Candace Bishop-Conlon; along with his six grandchildren, Tyler Kuhlman, Samantha Kuhlman, Ricarda Gass, Audrey Gass, Madeleine Conlon and Charles Conlon.
Jim was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on July 31, 1933, to Louise and James Bishop. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. He received his M.B.A. from University of Pittsburgh.
Jim lived life to the fullest and had a very adventurous spirit. As a young man he competed in barrel racing and was an avid skier. He was a licensed pilot, a scuba diver, and an accomplished sailor. Jim was a longtime member of the Corinthian Yacht Club.
Jim and his family moved to Marblehead in 1969 and quickly set up roots. He founded General Business Services of Marblehead, which later became Bishop Associates, where he was still actively at work. He was a member of the Old North Church, where he served as treasurer for many years.
Jim took civic responsibility very seriously, and lived a life improving and serving his beloved town of Marblehead. Jim was a long term member of Marblehead’s Planning Board, the Metropolitan Planning Committee, and the Marblehead Rotary Club. He was a Shriner and Mason, and always active and supportive of the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce. Jim even played Santa Claus in the early years of annual Marblehead Christmas Walk.
Jim was a proud Veteran, and recently honored at a Veteran’s Day ceremony in Marblehead. He was involved in, and supported numerous organizations, with his generous spirit.
Services for Jim will be held on Sunday, October 15, 2017, at 2 p.m. at the Old North Church, 35 Washington Street, Marblehead, MA 01945.
