Born in Swampscott on November 29, 1936, he was the son of the late Everett R. Wood, Sr. and Gladys (Channel) Wood. George was raised and educated in Swampscott. Like so many brave men of his day, George enlisted into the U.S. Air Force to help fight for our country during the Korean War. He enlisted on February 8, 1954 and served until his honorable discharge as an Airman, 1st Class on October 9, 1957. He served as a mechanic in the U.S. Air Force and utilized his skills in his career as a machinist. George worked for over 35 years with the Burke Machine Shop in Marblehead. He later went on to work for 22 years for R & D Engineering in Rowley before finally retiring in 2015. George married his long-time sweetheart, Nancy I. (LeBlanc) in Salem on May 5, 2001. George and Nancy enjoyed the waters of Salem aboard his boat “Freedom.” He thoroughly enjoyed fishing off his boat. They loved their trips to Foxwoods and Las Vegas where they would play the slots. In his earlier days, George loved to bowl and played regularly at Lucky Strike. He was a one-time member of the NRA and was an avid fan of his Boston sports teams. In addition to his wife Nancy, George leaves his children, Scott Wood and his wife, Cheryl of Haverhill, Lisa Whitmore of Maibe, Sherry Pickerell and her husband, Jason of N.Y., and Tammy Cordeiro of Salem; his grandchildren, Scott Wood, Jr. and Christy Wood, both of Haverhill, David Goodwin of TN, Brittany and Audrey Whitmore, both of Maine, Shelby Pickerell of Japan, Meg Pickerell of New York, and John and Gina Cordeiro, both of Salem, his great-grandchildren, Aiden Goodwin and Maleki Sinclair, as well as his siblings, Jean Dowling of Lynn, and Thomas Wood of Illinois.
