Elizabeth "Betty"'s Story

Text size

Elizabeth A. “Betty” Hart passed away peacefully on June 24, 2017. The daughter of the late William R. Hart and Elizabeth (Collins) Hart, Betty was born September 18, 1922 in Salem, Mass. She lived in Salem all of her life and was educated at St. Mary’s grammar school and Salem High School, graduating as a member of the class of 1939.
After being treated for tuberculosis for two-and-a-half years in Middleton, Betty went to work at the Salem Superior Courthouse as a switchboard operator. She retired from that job after 43 years of service. After retirement, she went to work for Hayes, Ledoux, Whipple and King Law Office in Salem.
Betty was well-known in the City of Salem, especially in the Fire Department circles. Her Father, Russ Hart, was appointed to the Salem Fire Department in 1920, became Lieutenant in 1932, Captain in 1940, Deputy Chief in 1949 and Chief in 1959. Russ retired in 1961. At one of the many Banquets that Betty attended, she was given the title of “Honorary Chief” for her years of support to the Salem Fire Department.
Betty was well-traveled. She loved the adventures of touring Europe, the Caribbean or sailing on the Mississippi Queen throughout the South. Her true passion was the Boston Red Sox. She never missed a game regardless of where they were playing. Seeing “her team” win the World Series certainly was the highlight of a lifelong loyalty to the team. She often spoke of going to the games at Fenway Park on “Ladies Day” for ten cents. Betty was a lifelong communicant of Immaculate Conception Parish in Salem and in her later years enjoyed watching Sunday Mass on TV from Notre Dame University.
Betty leaves cousins, John and Elizabeth Moore of Ballwin, Mo., Kathleen Moore of Madison, N.H., and Peter Moore of Peabody, and her “best buddy,” Jasper. Betty also leaves many loving and devoted friends, notably, Laura Bryson, Jack King, Tom and Charlene Gibney and Jim and Joanne Vining.
There will be no visiting hours per Betty’s request. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church, 15 Hawthorne Blvd., Salem, on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 10 a.m. Interment will take place immediately following at St Mary’s Cemetery, 226 North Street Salem. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the St. Vincent de Paul Society may be sent in Betty’s memory to SCC pastoral Center, 28 St Peter’s Street Salem, MA 01970.
