Donald A. McKeen, age 85, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2017, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Born in Salem, Mass., son of the late Frank Donald and Helen (Crosey) McKeen. Donald graduated from St. John’s Prep in 1950 and then Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1954. He then served two years active duty in the US Navy stationed in Sabego, Japan, as a Naval control shipping officer. He sailed in the Merchant Marines as a deck officer on tankers, cargo ships, and passenger ships. He spent 32 years at sea, the last 16 years of which were on an LNG Tanker running between Bontang, Borneo, and various ports in Japan. He also spent 10 years in the intelligence community. Don was a member of the Salem A.O.H., The Salem Moose Lodge, and St. Michael’s Polish Club in Peabody.
He leaves behind one sister, Joan; one son, Mike; two grandsons, Mike and Joe McKeen; one daughter, Maura Gunning and her husband, Andrew; three more grandchildren, Cooper, Madison and Jack Gunning; and one cousin, Bob Crosby.
Visiting hours for Donald will take place on Monday, January 16, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (corner of North Street), Salem, MA 01970. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at 12 p.m., also at the Murphy Funeral Home. Interment will be immediately following at St. Mary’s Cemetery, 226 North St., Salem, MA 01970.
