Charles "Ray"'s Story
Charles “Ray” McGinnis, 97, husband of the late Marie Joan (Calef) McGinnis, died peacefully on Saturday, August 26, 2017, at Hathorne Hill Rehab Center in Danvers.
Born in 1920, in Beverly, he was the son of the late Charles and Clara (Gaoette) McGinnis. He resided in Beverly most of his life.
Ray was a graduate of Beverly High School, Class of 1937. He was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during WWII and later went to work for Sylvania Lighting Service for 40-plus years. Ray was an amazing man who overcame his blindness which occurred later on in his life due to glaucoma. He continued to mow the lawn, snow blow and do all of the chores around his house. He never let the loss of his vision stop him and never complained about life challenges he faced without his eye sight. Ray's greatest joys in life were his two children, wife, and grandchildren. His hobbies included exercising, boating and fishing. He enjoyed listening to music and various radio talk shows. He was a true tinkerer. He built a couple of additions to his home and also the family boat the ChasBar.
Surviving him are his children, Charles R. (Chuck) McGinnis, Jr. and his wife, Janet of Danvers, and Barbara J. Bossie of Beverly. Also surviving him are his grandchildren, Kelly Bossie, Ryan, Christopher, and Allison McGinnis. Our family would also like to thank the staff of Hathorne Hill for their dedicated care of our father through the years. We would also like to acknowledge the Hospice nurses for their compassionate care.
A Funeral Service will be held privately by request of the family. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made, in Ray's name to the Carroll Center for the Blind, 770 Centre Street, Newton, MA 02458. Condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com.
