Charles K.'s Story

Text size

Mr. Charles K. Lyons, 81, of Danvers and Margate, Fla., died peacefully on February 16, 2017, at the VIP Memory Care Pavilion in Margate, Fla. Born in Danvers on August 29, 1935, “Charlie” was the youngest of 15 children born to the late Thomas and Florence (Walsh) Lyons. Charlie graduated Danvers High School and Fitchburg State College with a degree in education. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force, which included two tours in Thule, Greenland in the Strategic Air Command.
Charlie was an entrepreneur and educator who is most remembered for operating Danversport Bottled Gas and C.K. Lyons Plumbing & Heating. He was a vocational plumbing instructor at Salem High School, a Danvers plumbing and gas inspector, and a hypnotherapist. All of this he did with the unfailing support of his beloved wife of 54 years, Ruthanne.
Loved by his family and friends, he will be dearly missed. He was affectionately known as the “ Mayor of Danversport.” In his later years, he could be found engaged in spirited conversations in Danvers coffee shops.
When not working he enjoyed traveling, fishing, camping and playing the piano. His love of music was a gift that he shared with friends and passed on to his family. The family spent many summers on Salem harbor fishing and lobstering together. In the summer of 1970, Charlie packed up a station wagon and camped in 38 states with his family.
Charlie had many achievements in life. He was proud of the many successful students he had from the vocational program. Many of his students came back years later to tell him about their career path and how much of a positive influence he was in their life. He helped dozens of people to stop smoking as a hypnotherapist. Charlie was a past President of the Northeast Massachusetts Plumbing and Gas Inspectors Association. He ran a very successful family plumbing business in Danvers and was a scoutmaster in the 1970s.
He will always be remembered as the guy who would fill your barbecue tank on the weekend. His work ethic, stories and desire to please kept people coming back for two generations.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Ruthanne (Sirois) Lyons; his son, Thomas Lyons and his wife, Carolyne of Peabody; his daughter, Pamela DiTomaso and her husband, John of Peabody; his daughter, Theresa Bunn and her husband, Jimmy of Oklahoma City, Okla.; his six grandchildren, Thomas Lyons, Katie DiTomaso, Michelle DiTomaso, Margaret Bunn, Madelyn Bunn, and Elizabeth Bunn. Charlie was predeceased by his sons, Robert Wright and Charles K. (Chuck) Lyons, Jr.
