Carmelo Ambrosio, 90, of Cape Coral, Florida, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Hope Hospice on Thursday, March 16, 2017.
He was born August 13, 1926 in Catona, Italy to Concetta and Antonio Ambrosio who preceded him in death.
Mr. Ambrosio is survived by two sons, Richard Ambrosio of Beverly, Mass. and David Ambrosio and wife, Lisa of Atkinson, N.H.; his beloved granddaughter, Katy Ambrosio of Atkinson, N.H.; his nephews and their wives, Nino and Dagmar Ambrosio of Germany, Salvatore and Maria Ambrosio of Sicily and, Marcello and Angela Ambrosio of Italy; sister-in-law, Carol (Tom) MClaughlin of Florida and his brother-in-law, Anthony (Susan) Patti of Florida. Also surviving are numerous cousins, nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Italy as well as his dear friend and companion of many years, Gay Looney of Fort Myers, Fla. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ida R. Ambrosio in 1997; his brothers, Franco, Vincenzo and Angelo and his sister-in-law, Mary (Nappy) Pero.
Carmelo attended elementary school in Italy through 5th grade and then joined the workforce, working in a sawmill, to help support his family. He met his wife, Ida, when she was vacationing in Italy in 1957. He proposed the day after they met. He immigrated to Beverly, in 1959 and married Ida. They were married for 38 years.
Upon arriving in the United States, Carmelo worked for his father-in-law at Anthony Patti Construction, Inc. In 1966, he opened Carmelo’s Pizza in Beverly, Mass. He retired in 1986 and moved to Florida at that time. Carmelo was a hard worker who traveled all over the world, played cards, pool and dominos. He loved to watch televised wrestling. Most of all, Carmelo loved his family and was a great friend.
The family would like to thank Hope Hospice for their attentive care during his last days. They would also like to thank Gay and Jan, Carol and Tom, Tony and Sue, Shannon and Mike, Erica and Nick for their visits, homemade food and love and prayers this past year.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 2628 Del Prado Blvd., Cape Coral, Florida, with entombment to follow in Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
