Bernard Patrick Smith, 71, died on January 28, 2017, at his home in Marblehead, Mass. Born in Concord, Mass., and raised in the Leominster, Natick, and Worcester areas, he was the son of the late Joseph Andrew Smith II and his wife, Lorena (Crowley) Smith. He received his education at St. Bernard’s High School, All-Bernardian, Class of 1963, The College of the Holy Cross, Class of 1967, and Suffolk Law School, and was a Certified Public Accountant, attorney, and Charter Life Underwriter. He also served for several years as an adjunct professor at Bentley College in the graduate program for taxation.
Mr. Smith was employed by several accounting firms after his graduation from college and later opened his own business that provided accounting, estate planning, retirement planning, and underwriting services. He was an extremely hardworking man that deeply loved his family and brought laughter to many through his unique joke telling. An astute athlete, he was a black belt in Judo, an avid runner, squash player, and basketball player, and a high school cross-country and track standout. He was a man of devout Catholic faith and taught religious education and served as a Eucharistic minister and lector at numerous churches in the Boston area. The town of Marblehead was close to his heart, and he enjoyed taking long walks throughout town, spending time at Fort Sewall and near the ocean, having coffee with his friends at the Muffin House, and telling tall tales at the Barnacle.
He is survived by his children, Brian D. Carr-Smith and his wife, Jennifer of Chicago, Ill.; Scott W. Smith, Esq. and his wife, Anne of Beverly, Mass.; Amy K. Smith of San Francisco, Calif.; Jennifer A. Como and her husband, Christopher of San Mateo, Calif.; and Courtney J. Fitzgerald and her husband, Brian of Denver, Colo.; and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his loving siblings, J. Michael Smith and his wife, Mary Ann of Westminster, Mass.; Brenda Smith-Burke and her husband, James Burke, Esq. of North Easton, Mass.; Dr. William Smith and his wife, Lynne of Coldstream, British Columbia; Joseph A. Smith III of Bellevue, Wash.; brother-in-law, Joseph M. Baniukiewicz of Worcester, Mass.; many cousins; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late and beloved, Bernadette M. Baniukiewicz of Worcester, Mass., and Francis X. Smith of Avon, Conn.; and uncle to the late Joseph M. Baniukiewicz, Jr. of Worcester, Mass.
A private funeral Mass for family will be held later this week.
