Barbara May (Doane)'s Story
Barbara May (Doane) Humphrey, age 83, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 22, surrounded by her loving family. She was a lifelong resident of Swampscott. She was the wife of the late John S. "Jack" Humphrey, Jr. and the daughter of the late Emery L. Doane and Beatrice (Eaton) Johnston.
She worked as a bookkeeper for James J. Welch & Co. in Salem for 30 years. After her retirement in 2003, she did volunteer work at the Swampscott Town Hall and also worked the election polls. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She loved to work in the garden and also enjoyed knitting. She was very passionate about all animals and had developed a special relationship with the "Georges."
Barbara is survived by her two children, Sandra Harrigan of Connecticut and Michael Humphrey and his wife, Deborah of Connecticut; four grandchildren, William Harrigan and his wife, Samantha of Connecticut, Katherine Holley and her husband, Ben of Connecticut, John Harrigan of Massachusetts, and Elizabeth Harrigan of Connecticut; as well as four great-grandchildren, Ava, Alexandra, and Abigail Holley, and William Thomas Harrigan.
Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 11, at 11:30 a.m. in the Andrews Chapel at Swampscott Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Arrangements by the Solimine Funeral Home, Lynn.
